World's tallest woman, 53, dies in Indiana

I went to high school with her for a year in Shelbyville - shared no classes and wasn't a friend by any stretch (she was a couple of years ahead of me) but she was a definite presence in the hallways! And unlike most seniors, she'd always say "Hi", even to snot-nosed sophomores who were borderline terified of her size.

RIP

Sandy Allen, who used her height to inspire schoolchildren to accept those who are different, died at a nursing home in her hometown of Shelbyville, Indiana, family friend Rita Rose said.

Chip maker sues to quash research on RFID smart card security flaws

I put this in my 'Home' category, even though it could've gone into Technology, Agriculture or Copywrongs. There's so much wrong with this whole scenario that perhaps I've should've taken the time to figure out how to link it from all of them.

Read it for yourself and see what I mean.

A semiconductor company is suing a Dutch university to keep its researchers from publishing information about security flaws in the RFID chips used in up to 2 billion smart cards.

Back Home Again

I was on a smoke break at work about 2 today when a call came in on my cell from an unrecognized number, which was in itself somewhat remarkable. The contents of the call were even moreso.

It was a Border Collie breeder in Zionsville, who had gotten my number from Tim (who's also a breeder). A friend of theirs had found a stray Border Collie "out towards Crawfordsville" on State Road 32 and had brought her to them. The dog looked an awful lot like some of theirs, which had come originally from Tim, so they called him and asked if he was missing a dog. He wasn't but he knew I was, and had them call me.

It was Cubby. She's back home after nearly 6 weeks.

Count me officially in the camp that believes in miracles.

Comedian, author George Carlin dies at 71

I never understood how 'Tits' made the list either, George. RIP.

Groundbreaking comedian George Carlin, known for his raunchy, but insightful humor, died Sunday in Los Angeles, his publicist said. He was 71. Carlin was best known for his routine "Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television," which appeared 1972's "Class Clown" album.

Beloved Characters as Reimagined for the 21st Century

What's next? It's bad enough when they colorized Casablanca and put Richard III in a tank, but messing with Bugs Bunny?

“You want a dark, Goth version of Tweety Bird? Have at it,” said Lisa Gregorian, executive vice president for worldwide marketing at Warner Brothers Television.

No, thank you!

A large number of classic characters for children are being freshened up to try to cater to parents’ nostalgia and children’s YouTube-era sensibilities.

Flooding threatens dams in Indiana

All we lost was a flood gate at the north end of the main pasture, so we got off pretty lucky. Power went out for a couple of hours Friday night and was intermittent at other times (I would hear the battery backups give a beep or two and the clocks in the kitchen would need reset) but otherwise no damage.

A lot of the places you'll be seeing on the news in relation to this are very familiar to us: Lorraine's family is mostly in Morgan County a she has a brother near Columbus - those folks got really nailed.

This last week has been one of those "weeks from Hel" that read about happening to other folks - we're way behind on everything, and are getting ready to go hit the barn and shear some sheep. And the lawnmower is actually fixed, so maybe we can get caught up a bit today.

Severe storms flooded central Indiana with as much as 10 inches of rain Saturday and spawned tornadoes that ripped up roofs and flipped tractor-trailers in Wisconsin and the Chicago suburbs.

The Last Weekend

Were I to blog honestly about the events of the last five days (from Friday through yesterday, Tuesday) neither of my readers would believe it - it'd have to be marked as fiction. Perhaps someday I'll tell the full tale. For now, suffice it to say that I have a new toilet, a new shower head, a new wetwall in the bathroom, a new back door (with deadbolt) and two refitted window screens.

None of this was weather related - it was damage by another sort of storm. The problem has been corrected. And yes, I'm still married and quite happily, too.

The only weather related disaster (so far) has been Cubby, who leapt the gate to her little sleeping space Monday night during a horrendous thunderstorm and then crashed through a partially open window in the dining room. We haven't seen her since.

In other news, my new lawnmower is still sitting with broken blades, but that's OK because it's rained every day. Lots of rain.

I'm about out of cash, I'm exhausted, and I've missed two days of work this week. Hammer is limping from spring grass founder, Francie (the goat) is limping from an injured front leg and the sheep haven't been sheared. It's supposed to be 90°F tomorrow. I hope I don't have baked lamb for dinner.

Ah, the bucolic country life.

Dick Martin, Who Rode ‘Laugh-In’ to Fame, Dies at 86

RIP. Goodnight, Dick.

With his partner, Dan Rowan, Mr. Martin turned a midseason replacement slot at NBC in 1968 into a hit that redefined what could be done on television.

May 20, 1873: The Pants That Changed the World

If they didn't exist, I wonder what I'd wear every day?

Blue jeans assume their distinctive form when a patent is issued for the rivet process used to strengthen the pockets on what were then called "waist overalls."

Landlines go dead as more use cell phones

Hrumpf! We're moving in the opposite direction here: our cell phones are about to go dead. They foist unpredictable charges on the budget, are generally more expensive than a landline and for me to actually use mine out here requires going out to the east paddock and standing close to the fence!

I'll take the easy chair, a landline and an answering machine.

For nearly three in 10 households, don't even bother trying to call them on a landline phone. They either only have a cell phone or seldom if ever take calls on their traditional phone.

For a Pinball Survivor, the Game Isn’t Over

I was a wizard once upon a time, and still love the games in computer sims. But there's nothing that can compare to the real deal, in an arcade. And while the machines may remain, those are long gone.

A range of companies once mass produced pinball machines, especially in the Chicago area. Now there is only Stern Pinball Inc. in Melrose Park, Ill.
