Isn't is just slightly weird that all manufactured goods entering the US must be labeled as to their country of origin - except food? It's tough to convince people to buy American beef when they can't see the country of origin on the package!

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Sen. Max Baucus joined other farm-state senators in promoting the implementation of the country-of-origin labeling law.

I wonder if COOL would also apply to shellfish products like shrimp, since asian countries have been flooding the US market with lower cost, and lower quality shrimp for years. It's a big issue here on the Gulf Coast, the shrimping and fishing industries are taking a heavy hit from foreign shrimp dumping. It's very hard to tell where shrimp comes from when you're looking in the local supermarket. John Q. Consumer just doesn't have the means to go to the fishmonger and buy only local produce.

I used to love those frozen shrimp rings the stores here sell - until I noticed that some of them said "Product of Vietnam" or "Product of Thailand" - not mandatory COOL, but voluntary. Then I did some research and discovered the true percentages - it's a wonder there's a shrimp fleet left on the Gulf Coast. Bubba Gump would have a hellva time pulling it off today. The other thing I discovered about the shrimp from SE Asia is that they're farmed. And the way they build shrimp farms is to find a nice secluded mangrove forest on the coast and destroy it to build the pens... which explains a lot of the damage from the recent tsunami. Go figure.
