Riding Herd With a Database

I find this kind of funny: all of my cattle are already in a database, with complete pedigrees going back five or more generations. In fact, nearly all of the "rare" or "heritage" breed producers already keep such records. It's only in the big commercial breeds that they're managed to lose track of the genetics. And genetics are the basis of cattle breeding.

The cattle industry hopes to have a database in place for tracking its animals by January, at least three years earlier than a similar system proposed by the government.
