It's Time for Reality Porn

It's about a lot more than porn:

Living in Los Angeles I see an increasing acceptance of biosculpting as a normal part of American life, like daily moisturizer with SPF 15 and a mammogram when you're 40. Our alternative weekly paper is thick with advertisements for Botox injections and collagen lip plumping, liposuction and face lifts. Asymmetrical labia ruining your sexual confidence? Labiaplasty can help! Life sucks? Apply to be on Extreme Makeover or The Swan, and all your dreams will come true!

I, too, find the trend towards plasticity very disturbing: as a culture, we seem intent on believing that the look makes the book. Maybe we need to remember things our mothers used to tell us, things like "Beauty is only skin deep ..."

Gina Lynn wonders why cosmetic surgery has become so commonplace and suggests that it's time for a change.

Notes: If you put a <mailto:> link in the URL field your address will not be mangled: this could be a bad idea as your email address could be easily harvested by bots designed for SPAM. The comments field should now format correctly for line feeds and carriage returns: when you hit the 'Enter' or 'Return' keys in your comment it should break to a new line. The text should wrap cleanly. Please let me know if it doesn't. No HTML tags will pass through - entering links seems to be the main cause of comment SPAM. Also, please be sure that Javascript is enabled in your browser before attempting to post a writeback. Sorry for any inconvenience, but this really helps cut down on the amount of comment SPAM I have to deal with.
