Cops: Dad sold teen into marriage for cash, beer

How could a story like this get categorized as 'Humor'? It could be the dude calling the cops on himself, or it could be the bride price:

$16,000 [and provide him with] 160 cases of beer, 100 cases of soda, 50 cases of Gatorade, two cases of wine, and six cases of meat.

There's the cultural dissonance: the fellow apparently wasn't aware he was doing anything wrong. It may be called "custom" in Oaxaca, but in California it's called "felony".

But in reality, the absurdity is visual: Think sci-fi movies. Think Star Wars. Think Carrie Fischer with a chain on being jerked around. And then you have to go and see the mug shot.

Amazing.

A California man sold his 14-year-old daughter to an 18-year-old man for cash, beer and meat -- then called police when the prospective bridegroom didn't live up to his end of the deal, authorities said Tuesday.

Notes: If you put a <mailto:> link in the URL field your address will not be mangled: this could be a bad idea as your email address could be easily harvested by bots designed for SPAM. The comments field should now format correctly for line feeds and carriage returns: when you hit the 'Enter' or 'Return' keys in your comment it should break to a new line. The text should wrap cleanly. Please let me know if it doesn't. No HTML tags will pass through - entering links seems to be the main cause of comment SPAM. Also, please be sure that Javascript is enabled in your browser before attempting to post a writeback. Sorry for any inconvenience, but this really helps cut down on the amount of comment SPAM I have to deal with.
