Hilarious look at a problem common to males in Western culture: do you look like you've got hip tumors?

Portable gadgets are tons of fun, but hauling all those gizmos poses a style and comfort conundrum. Luckily, some contraptions let real men tote their gear without jeopardizing their masculinity. Commentary by Lore Sjöberg.

All that commentary and not a single answer. :::Sigh::: This gadget-hauling-conundrum is precisely why I often prefer the colder months: Coat pockets are great for carrying small gadgets, as well as one's keys. Fortunately, my mobile phone (Treo) clips easily to my belt, and it combines Palm device features with a camera, so that decreases the number of gadgets I am likely to carry on my person. But if I want to bring my iPod or a better camera with me ... and there's a blazing sun ... well, I can't use a jacket, and the backpack might be overkill (particularly if I don't need to bring the laptop). I need gadget-carrying options, dammit! (or just leave it all at home -- that's always the lightest option).

I wind up carrying a couple of USB drives, an iPod, a Nintendo DS, and my PDA (plus a pen/stylus and some microfiber cloths for cleaning my glasses) in the thing on a regular basis. I'm on version 3.0 now, which is a red nylon jobbie built like a small backpack - found it at a luggage store at the airport. I've considered going with some sort of vest as a second option, since my boss at work is fond of handing out polarfleece vests as year-end morale boosters - since the whole tech department/geek squad is wearing vests anyway, might as well make them functional as well...

Vests are kinda like bandoliers, especially the more "military harness" kind that would be really useful for clipping stuff onto. But a photo-journalist type vest, fully loaded can make the wearer resemble Bibendum ... hip tumors on steroids and across your chest! The other nice thing about bandoliers is that they'd remind some of us to pick up the ammo and take some target practice once in a while.
