Uh, because they like it?

Ninety-six percent of respondents said that they liked or strongly like the taste of soft drinks. Those children who reported that they ''strongly liked'' the taste of soft drinks were 4.5 times more likely to drink soft drinks five or more times per week.

I'm going to apply for a grant to do a study to see if I can discover why people do useless studies to answer obvious questions.

Flavored, carbonated drinks have been around for about two hundred years. And their popularity continues to grow--overtaking more nutritious beverages among some age groups, especially children and adolescents. Researchers from the University of Minnesota surveyed 560 children ages 8 to 13 years old on how often they drank soft drinks and the factors that influence soft drink consumption.

I think it would be interesting to do a survey on the converse. For those who don't drink soda pop much or at all, why don't they? Is it simply because they don't like the taste? Just wondering if there are kids out there who have higher motvations in life than it tastes good or it feels good.

I would imagine that the only other "higher" reason would be a religious objection: and the only religion I know of that objects to soda pop would be Mormoonism, and then only caffinated sodas. I don't think the pop companies are particularly socially obnoxious (like some would perceive the tobacco companies, for instance, or land mine manufacturers), and losing weight wouldn't be necessarily valid: the survey concerned general pop consumption, not diet or regular (and diet sodas have 0 calories). So I'd be willing to bet that if your proposed converse survey was done, that "bad taste" would win. Thanx for the comment and Be well, Dave H.
