Bush Names Portman Trade Representative

Here's a quote from our new Trade Rep:

"Open markets and better trade relations are key components to a more peaceful and more stable and more prosperous world," he said. "Here at home, trade policy opens markets to create jobs, a higher standard of living and greater economic growth."

He's right, you know. As implemented since 1992, US trade policy creates more jobs in India, a higher standard of living in Singapore and greater economic growth in China... but I'm not bitter! I can't wait until they turn the US into a full-fledged member of the Third World. That way, maybe we can collect foreign aid from Mongolia and Bangladesh!

AP - President Bush chose congressman Rob Portman to be U.S. trade representative on Thursday, saying the Ohio Republican has shown a deep dedication to free and fair trade.

Notes: If you put a <mailto:> link in the URL field your address will not be mangled: this could be a bad idea as your email address could be easily harvested by bots designed for SPAM. The comments field should now format correctly for line feeds and carriage returns: when you hit the 'Enter' or 'Return' keys in your comment it should break to a new line. The text should wrap cleanly. Please let me know if it doesn't. No HTML tags will pass through - entering links seems to be the main cause of comment SPAM. Also, please be sure that Javascript is enabled in your browser before attempting to post a writeback. Sorry for any inconvenience, but this really helps cut down on the amount of comment SPAM I have to deal with.
