Why Does the Extreme Right Love Cancer?

Unbelievable...

The Family Research Council is concerned that vaccinating against HPV might encourage kids to have sex. This is probably a legitimate concern-- I know that when I got a tetanus vaccine, the first thing I wanted to do was to run out and play on rusty manure-spreading farm equipment in an effort to get as many puncture wounds as possible.

I'd like to point out that the vaccine has only been proven 100% effective by Merk's own research. I'm hoping fervently that indepentant research yeilds the same results, but I think it's important that we all be patient for those results and not do Merk's marketing work for it. We all know what happened with Vioxx, and that was after rigorous independant testing.

the Religious Right has been about three bricks shy of a full load (as we say here in Hoosier Land) for quite a while. What scares me is their proximity to and influence on political power, such as this piece illustrates. And I did not realize that it had only been tested by Merck itself. But still, the FRC and other loonies are not opposed because they think it may be ineffective - they're opposed because they're afraid it might work, and thus take away a "consequence" of "immoral" behavior. It's like saying we have to ban Vioxx not because it causes heart attacks, but because it relieves arthritis ... Thanks for the comments, and Be well, Dave H.
