Google Layoffs - 10,000 Workers Affected

"First, do no evil." Silly me - I always supposed that "evil" consisted in lying, or not telling the truth, be that an overt, baldfaced lie or a sly little legal workaround.

I understand having to reduce operational expenses. I understand that every business has tough times. I don't understand lying about it.

So much for Google and the moral high ground.

Google has been quietly laying off staff and up to 10,000 jobs could be on the chopping block according to sources. Since August, hundreds of employees have been laid off and there are reports that about 500 of them were recruiters for Google.

I got to tour the google campus a few months ago, and it's amazing the degree to which they try to integrate the company into employee's lifestyles. The employees, for the most part, seem happy to let Google do so. I remember thinking at the time, though, that it would really suck -- more than usual -- to get laid off. Google wasn't just work, it was social club, extended family, the home you stayed at when you weren't asleep.

I phone interviewed with aa Google recruiter about a year ago, and frankly, it kinda weirded me out. They wanted "team players", which is perfectly normal, I suppose, but they never said the words - it was all about the "Google family". No thank you, I've already got one! One problem -- Google's motto isn't "Do no evil". It's "Don't be evil," which I think is much easier to bend. Plenty of evil gets done by those who are arguably not evil themselves.
